Geoff Hanson Taking Reins As Women’s Swimming Head Coach At Western State Colorado

GUNNISON, Colorado, September 23. WESTERN State Colorado University Athletic Director Jason Carmichael is excited to announce Geoff Hanson as the new Mountaineer women’s swimming and diving interim head coach. Hanson brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Western program, in its third year of reinstatement.

“We are pleased to have Coach Hanson join us in the Mountaineer Athletic Department,” Carmichael said. “Geoff should be a valuable resource for our student-athletes as we continue to move Mountaineer swimming and diving forward.”

Hanson previously coached at the University of Arizona for two years as the head assistant coach. He work primarily with Arizona’s distance freestyle and medley swimmers while also handling recruiting for the men’s team.

“I am extremely excited to be joining the Mountaineer Swimming and Diving family,” Hanson remarked. “It is a unique opportunity to head up a relatively new program with quality people involved in all aspects, from the student-athletes to the administration, all in one of the most beautiful places in the country. I want to thank Athletic Director Jason Carmichael for bringing me on board and giving me the chance to continue to grow the program.”

Before Arizona, Hanson coached for 12 seasons at the University of Wisconsin in the assistant head coach capacity. Hanson was instrumental in leading the Badgers to its highest finish at the NCAA Championships along with mentoring the program’s first-ever individual national champion in 2011. Hanson’s primary duties at Wisconsin included working with distance and IM swimmers as well as being the director of Badger swim camps.

Hanson made his way to Wisconsin from a previous stint at the University of Arizona, his alma mater, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach for two years. Hanson worked with the middle distance and distance swimmers in weight training and cross training, as well as stroke and technique work.

During that time he also was the assistant senior coach, head developmental coach and masters assistant coach with Hillenbrand Aquatics of Tucson, Ariz.

Hanson was a four-year letter winner and two-time team captain at Arizona. He was a 1996 NCAA All-American and a Pac-10 Conference finalist for four years. Hanson also was a finalist at the U.S. Nationals.

A 1998 graduate of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in sociology, Hanson earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors and was a four-time Mary Roby Academic Achievement award recipient.
