Gena Jorgenson, Liv Dorshorst Set 1,000 Free Records as Nebraska Tops Illinois

Gena Jorgenson and Liv Dorshorst both set records in the 1,000 freestyle on Saturday as Nebraska topped Illinois, 168-132, in a dual meet in Lincoln.

Jorgenson won the event, the Nebraska freshman setting a Devaney Center Natatorium record of 9:53.58. Second in the event was Dorshorst, who went 9:56.73 to set the Illinois program record. The third-place finisher, Cara Bognar, moved into fifth place in Fightin’ Illini history.

Jorgenson was second in her other two swims on the afternoon, the 500 free (behind teammate Shannon Stott) and the 400 individual medley. It helped settle a meet that swung back and forth with 1-2-3 finishes early on.

Stott led one for the Cornhuskers in the 200 butterfly, winning in 1:58.40. But Illinois answered by taking the top three spots (plus an exhibitioned fourth) in the 50 free, Isabelle Guerra leading the way.

Nebraska wore the visiting Illini down, though. Alexa Kucera edged out Sydney Stoll in the 200 free, her winning time of 1:49.56 a quarter-second ahead. She finished third in the 100 fly, won by teammate Caitlin Cairns.

Jojo Randby won the 100 breaststroke. Madesyn Ronquillo broke two minutes in the 200 back. (She also posted the top time in the exhibition 200 individual medley.) Kucera, Cairns, Stott and Giulia Marchi won an exciting 400 free relay by .09 seconds in 3:23.94. Nebraska also went 1-2 in both diving events, with Kelsey Clairmont (297.08 on 3-meter, 281.70 on 1-meter) leading Reagan Hinze in each.

Illinois got its wins. Laurel Bludgen went from second to Guerra in the 50 free to winning the 100. Athena Salafatinos and Suvana Baskar took home the top two spots in the 100 back. Kaleigh Haworth won the 200 breast after finishing third in the 100. Stoll finished second in the 200 free and third in the 200 back. Sara Jass won the 400 IM after finishing third in the 200 breast.
