French Short Course Championships: Day Two Finals Showcase Several National Records

NIMES, France, December 8. WITH five French records falling on the first night of swimming at the French Short Course Championships in Nimes, France, the second night had a lot to live up to. Four national records tumbled, however, while two others nearly fell as well.

Coralie Dobral and Camille Muffat wiped out standard on the women's side. Dobral clocked a time of 2:24.98 in the 200 breast to surpassed the 1999 record of Karine Bremond (2:25.97). Additionally, Sophie De Ronchi also eclipsed the record with a second-place readout of 2:25.19.

Muffat knocked a chunk off the women's 400 IM record with a time of 4:31.66. The previous standard had been held by Laure Manaudou with a 4:33.73 set in 2006.

In men's action, Benjamin Stasiulis and Antoine Galavtine both notched French records. Stasiulis clocked a time of 52.22 in the 100 back to erase the 52.86 set by Pierre Roger in 2003. Roger, meanwhile, placed second in the race just behind Stasiulis with a lifetime-best 52.28.

Galavtine, on the other hand, dropped a time of 23.43 to nip Romain Barnier's 2005 national record of 23.45 in the men's 50 fly.

A pair of women also nearly cleared French records during the session. Diane Bui Duyet clocked a time of 26.48, just off Alena Popchanka's 2006 national record of 26.41 in the 50 fly. Popchanka, notably, finished second in 26.60.

Meanwhile, Manaudou hit the wall in 1:53.88 in the 200 free for a meet record less than half a second off her national record time of 1:53.48.

Hugues Duboscq and Nicolas Rostoucher provided a pair of meet records as well. Duboscq won the 200 breast in 2:08.70, while Rostoucher surfaced from the 400 IM with a time of 4:09.94.

Other individual event winners included Alexiane Castel in the women's 100 back (59.79) and Amaury Leveaux in the men's 200 free (1:44.68).
