Fred Bousquet Serving Two-Month Sentence for Positive Drug Test — Updated

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 20. THE French sports newspaper L'Equipe has reported that Olympic medalist Fred Bousquet is one month into serving a two-month suspension for a failed drug test at the Canet stop of the Mare Nostrum series on June 13.

Bousquet told L'Equipe that the suspension comes from using an ointment for treating hemorrhoids that contained the banned substance heptaminol. Bousquet told the newspaper that he got the over-the-counter medication at a pharmacy in France because he had run out of the medication he normally uses. His regular medication does not contain heptaminol, he said.

The suspension by the French swimming federation ends Nov. 20, according to L'Equipe. FINA and the World Anti-Doping Agency have not made a ruling on Bousquet's positive drug test.

Last weekend, Bousquet participated in the inaugural Tiburon Sprint Classic, finishing in fourth place in the special charity event. Event founder Bob Placak told Swimming World today that the event was purely exhibition and not sanctioned by any swimming organization, which would not violate Bousquet's suspension.
