SAN FRANCISCO, California, June 20. FRANZISKA Barthel, 8, became the youngest swimmer to complete the Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim on June 10. The third grader from Caesar Chavez School finished the swim in 1:00:44.3 during the 1.5-mile event.
Barthel surpassed the previous age record of 11 held by Chandler Vilander since swimming the event in 2005.
Meanwhile, her brother Ben placed second in his age group that included 13-year-olds when he clocked a 59:18.5.
