Fran Crippen Mission Viejo Swim Meet of Champions Day Four: Caeleb Dressel Swims 50.3 100 Fly, Yan Zibei Breaks US Open Record

The 2019 Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions wrapped up its final night of competition in Mission Viejo. After a grueling four days of competition, the athletes exhibited resilience and grit, finishing strong in a stellar show of endurance. With an eclectic 14-event lineup, the country’s best athletes reconvened to honor Crippen with quite the finale, as this year’s legendary competition came to a close.

Fran Crippen was a decorated American distance swimmer who transitioned to open water competitions in 2006. He tragically passed away in 2010 at age 26, leaving the swim community heartbroken. Since then, elite athletes from around the world have convened at an annual swim meet in his honor, an event that embodies Crippen to the fullest.

Women’s 100 Breast

Annie Lazor turned heads once again, sending murmurs throughout the swim community about her Olympic potential. With a 1:06.72, Lazor reclaimed sprint breaststroke after losing to Breeja Larson (1:07.04) in the 50 last night. ShiWen Ye stroked in at third with a 1:07.69, putting distance between herself and Isabell Odgers (1:10.31).

Ran Suo conceded fourth by a narrow margin, clocking in at 1:10.47 ahead of Emma Weber (1:10.71). Ellie Jew and Maggie Aroesty rounded out the championship final with times of 1:11.28 and 1:11.63, respectively.

Men’s 100 Breast

Zibei Yan (58.74) was not to be upstaged, posting the only time under 1:00 to seize the meet record. Dmitry Balandin (1:00.12) was his runner up, as he and Ruizan Zhang (1:01.24) went stroke for stroke at the finish. Sam Iida was close behind, crashing the pads with a 1:01.75 for fourth.

Jimmy Deiparine filled out the top five with a 1:02.44, edging out Youss Elkamash (1:02.79) and Miguel Chavez (1:03.12). Jon Cook put forth an impressive effort of his own, clocking in at 1:05.37.

Women’s 800 Free

Erica Sullivan (8:26.15) forced her name back on the scene with a dirty 800 free, bettering Haley Anderson’s (8:27.65) mark by over a second. Ally McHugh touched in third, posting an 8:33.67 to bump Rebecca Mann (8:37.47) to fourth.

Cierra Runge broke into the top five with an 8:40.91, gaining a healthy advantage over Kendall Dawson (8:43.17). Taylor Ault dropped an 8:45.90 for seventh, while Erica Laning filled out the top eight with a 8:46.37.

Ali DeLoof ran away with the women’s 100 back, throwing up a 1:00.98 to take down sixteen-year-old Xuwei Peng (1:01.59). Beata Nelson showcased her talents with a 1:01.70, beating ACC rival Alyssa Marsh (1:02.48).

YaXin Liu secured a spot in the top five with a 1:02.92, while Ayla Spitz seized a junior national cut with a 1:03.15. Mara Newman and Taylor Nations brought up the rear with times of 1:04.37 and 1:05.25, respectively.

JiaYu Xu bettered an already impressive individual schedule with his winning performance in the 100 back, downing the meet record with a 52.79. Zachary Poti stroked in over two seconds later with a 55.26 for second, with Cole Pratt (55.81) following close behind. Douglas Nogueira nabbed a Trials cut with his 56.58, while Adil Kaskabay narrowly eclipsed the mark with a 57.43.

Justin Nguyen surged down the lane to a 57.53 finish, leaving Max St. George (58.12) and Thomas Anderson (58.31) to finish up the heat.

Men’s 800 Free

Jordan Willimovsky (7:58.58) established his dominance in the men’s 800 free, going sub-8:00 to leave the rest of the field. Andre D’Arrigo chased him, turning in an 8:01.56 to nab the half second advantage over True Sweetser (8:01.93). Brooks Fail clocked in at 8:04.57, fending off Brenna Gravely (8:05.39) in the final 100 meters.

Gordan Mason (8:11.70) and Jude Williams (8:11.90) showcased the depth of the heat, seizing sixth and seventh with times well under the Trials cut. Jose Gutierrez also reserved a lane in Omaha with his 8:12.27.

Women’s 100 Fly

Louise Hansson earned top honors in the women’s 100 fly with a 58.15, as Kendyl Stewart (58.35) pushed her to the finish. Xintong Lin (59.89) secured third with the last time under 1:00, leaving Justina Kozan to take fourth with a time of 1:00.38.

Catherine Sanchez headed the second wave with a 1:01.53, finishing a stroke ahead of Katie Crom (1:01.97). Katie Higgins and Asia Kozan wrapped up a loaded heat with times of 1:02.17 and 1:02.62, respectively.

Men’s 100 Fly

Caeleb Dressel showed off his versatility in the men’s 100 fly, enforcing his monopoly on sprint events with a meet-record 50.36. Adilbek Mussin was his closest competitor at 52.61, which barely surpassed Marius Kusch’s mark of 52.79. Evan Carlson managed to lower his time from prelims, posting a 53.08 for fourth, while Jiajun Sun turned in a 53.25 to break into the top five.

Cody Bybee had an impressive swim of his own, clocking in at 53.90 to take down Kyle Robrock (54.15) and Ariel Spektor (54.84).

Women’s 200 IM

Bailey Andison showed no signs of fatigue after a loaded individual schedule, turning in a 2:14.77 for the women’s 200 IM win. Beata Nelson (2:15.36) managed to seize second shortly after her top-three performance in the 100 back, leaving Aly Mchugh (2:16.59) to take third. Mia Zhou was in the mix with a 2:17.12, gaining enough of an advantage in the first 100 to fend off Lillie Hosack (2:17.82). Justina Kozan bounced back quickly after her 100 fly, surging to a 2:17.83 finish ahead of Tatum Wade (2:20.13). Katie Glavinovich finished strong with a 2:20.98.

Men’s 200 IM

All eyes darted to the scoreboard to confirm the victor of the men’s 200 IM, as Jacob Heidtmann (2:01.39) and Grant House (2:01.40) turned in nearly identical races to go 1-2. JunJie Wu stayed within striking distance, leaving the rest of the pack and posting a 2:02.42 for third.

Jarod Arroyo just missed the Trials cut with his 2:04.21, edging Cole Pratt (2:04.34) at the finish. Zachary Tan reemerged in the top six, bettering his time from prelims with a 2:04.45. Brooks Fail handled his quick event turnaround like a pro, posting a 2:05.76 to upset Will Goodwin (2:06.58)

Women’s 50 Fly

Louise Hansson shattered the SMOC and pool record with a 26.30 50 fly, with sprinting stalwart Alyssa Marsh (26.73) stroking in close behind. Anicka Delgado bettered her time from semis with a 27.43, taking down Kenisha Liu (27.61) in the process. Marina Spadoni secured fifth with a time of 27.83, out-touching Mia Kragh (27.86) by a fingertip. Katie Higgins and Lucy Fellner wrapped up the women’s individual schedule with times of 28.11 and 28.61, respectively.

Adilbek Mussin posted the only time under 24.00 in the men’s 50 fly, surging down the center of the lane for a 23.76 finish. The race was on for second, as Peter Holoda and Evan Carlson went stroke for stroke at the finish, dropping times of 24.26 and 24.44, respectively. Kyle Robrock narrowly conceded third, going 24.47 to edge out Artyo Machekin (24.58).

ZhuHao Li secured sixth in the tightly packed heat. Yusuf Tibazi (24.81) and Ali Khalafalla (24.82) proceeded him.
