Four Titles Awarded at Speedo Junior National Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, July 27. FOUR divers claimed junior national championships at the IU Natatorium on Wednesday during the Speedo Junior National Diving Championships in Indianapolis.

Nick McCrory (Chapel Hill, N.C.) won the boys 14-15 platform title, while Haley Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif.) picked up the girls 14-15 platform crown. In 13 and under competition, Kaylea Arnett (The Woodlands, Texas) pocketed the girls three-meter championship, while Ross Edfort (Somerset, N.J.) won the boys one-meter title.

Ishimatsu did not let jet lag get in the way of her victory. She had been in China since July 11 representing the USA in the FINA Diving World Cup and should have returned to the U.S. on Tuesday, but the team encountered a delay in Shanghai and arrived in Indianapolis just hours before Ishimatsu competed in the platform competition. Nonetheless, a fatigued Ishimatsu put together a solid set for a first-place total of 339.55 points. Katrina Young (Shoreline, Wash.) won the silver with 313.10 points, and Ishimatsu’s Trojan Dive Club teammate Cosima Lenz (Altadena, Calif.) scored 305.20 points for bronze. Ashley Herra (La Palma, Calif.) and Roxanne Fitter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored 292.05 and 288.55, respectively, to round out the top five.

McCrory won his title in dramatic fashion, trailing eventual silver medalist Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.) with one round remaining. McCrory received one 9.0 and two 8.5s on his last dive, an inward three-and-one-half, for a final score of 437.55 to overtake Ipsen, who finished with 432.65 points. Tom Neubacher (Windermere, Fla.) scored 381.85 for the bronze medal, and Jordan Dyson (Burr Ridge, Ill.) placed fourth at 325.75. David Bonuchi (Columbia, Mo.) finished fifth with 325.70 points.

Arnett successfully defended her national title in the girls 13-under three-meter competition, winning the event with 319.95 points. Mary Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind.) won the silver medal with 313.80 points, and two of Arnett’s Woodlands Diving Academy teammates claimed the third and fourth spots. Kassidy Cook (Plantation, Fla.) finished third at 296.15, followed by Michelle Cabassol (Montgomery, Texas) at 284.80. Shanna Schuelein (Oklahoma City) rounded out the top five with 267.15 points.

While the girls 13 and under group had a repeat champion, the boys 13 and under one-meter crowned a new champion now that Ipsen, who had won the title the last three years, moved up to the 14-15 age group. In a close contest, Edfort finished with 262.90 points for his first national title, narrowly edging out silver medalist Cory Bowersox (Burke, Va.), who scored 259.05 points. Charlie Retter (Blue Bell, Pa.) took the bronze at 242.75. Zachary Woods (Key Largo, Fla.) scored 259.05 points for fourth, and Clay Pinckney (San Bernardino, Calif.) placed fifth with 221.40 points.

The Speedo Junior National Championships continue through Sunday, July 30. In all, 18 national titles will be awarded.
