Four Different Schools Take Weekly CAA Awards
On Wednesday, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) handed out four weekly swimming and diving awards to four different student-athletes.
Drexel sophomore Jason Arthur was named Men’s Swimmer of the Week, Towson freshman Will Canny earned Men’s Diver of the Week, William & Mary junior Morgan Smith picked up Women’s Swimmer of the Week honors, and Northeastern senior Alyssa Seales rounded out the awards as the Women’s Diver of the Week.
MEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Jason Arthur • Drexel
Sophomore | Teaneck, N.J.
In Drexel’s regular season finale at Georgetown over the weekend, Arthur won three individual events and also swam a leg on a winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:34.40) as the Dragons defeated the Hoyas to remain undefeated on the season. The sophomore captured gold in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, registering respective times of 50.49 and 1:48.80, and capped the meet with another victory in the 400-IM (4:02.88). All three individual performances rank among the top-10 for the best times per event in the CAA this season. This is Arthur’s second Swimmer of the Week honor of 2017-18 and first since Dec. 6.
MEN’S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Will Canny • Towson
Freshman | Havertown, Pa.
Canny’s second weekly award (first since Oct. 25) comes after the freshman swept both boards in the Tigers’ home finale win over conference foe Delaware this past weekend. The Pennsylvania native scored 262.65 on the 1-meter and 294.15 on the 3-meter. According to collegeswimming.com, his winning 3-meter score is the highest in the CAA so far this season.
WOMEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Morgan Smith • William & Mary
Junior | Verona, N.J.
Smith, who becomes the second W&M women’s swimmer to win the top individual weekly CAA honor this season, helped the Tribe take down Davidson over the weekend in their home finale to move to 11-2 overall. The junior started the meet with a third place finish in the 200 free, but followed with a program pool record in the 400 IM (4:29.34) breaking the previous mark of 4:30.78 set during the 2007 season.
WOMEN’S DIVER OF THE WEEK: Alyssa Seales • Northeastern
Senior | Framingham, Mass.
Seales joins teammate Jacquelyn Gover as the only Huskies to win a pair of weekly CAA diving awards this season. The Massachusetts native shined in the final home meet of her NU career, sweeping both diving boards in a victory over Central Connecticut State. She scored a season and CAA-best 279.45 on the 1-meter and responded with a score of 269.48 on the 3-meter.
