The 47th European Junior Championships will be held at the Foro Italico in Rome from 6-11 July, governing body LEN has announced.

The European Junior Diving Championships will be staged in Rijeka, Croatia, from 22 to 27 June.

Last year’s European junior swimming competition was due to be held in Aberdeen, Scotland, with the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh staging the diving but they were postponed in April in the light of Covid-19.

In May LEN announced it had cancelled all junior events in 2020.

British Swimming welcomed the news while adding: “We will be considering our plans for this meet in due course, in conjunction with Government guidance, but for swimming we will not be using the British Swimming Selection Trials to select a team.”

The governing body announced details of their trials for Tokyo last month with the main focus of the event on senior selection, saying:

“Due to the ongoing COVID restrictions, continued uncertainty around the exact timetable of easing of lockdown, and in recognition that relatively few swimmers are back in training, the meet has been scaled back, with the ultimate focus being senior selections for international competition later this year.

“We have also removed the junior-specific element of the Trials, given the overwhelming majority of young swimmers have not been able to train for the best part of the last 12 months, that there has been no announcement from LEN or FINA around dates and venues for the 2021 European Junior or World Junior Championships, school term dates around the Easter period are still fluid and variable, and our ability to reasonably select any junior representative teams has been severely compromised.”
