Florida Sweeps Men’s SEC Weekly Honors After Win over Tennessee

The University of Florida placed a swimmer in all three categories on the men’s side of the SEC Weekly Honors, released on Tuesday.

Alfonso Mestre was named the men’s swimmer of the week. Skip Donald split the diver of the week plaudits with Texas A&M’s Victor Povzner, and Josh Liendo was crowned freshman of the week.

On the women’s side, Kensey McMahon of Alabama led the way as the swimmer of the week. South Carolina’s Brooke Schultz was named diver of the week, with Betsy Wizard of Arkansas as the freshman of the week.

Mestre helped orchestrate a big win for Florida over Tennessee last week. He won two events, prevailing in the 500 free and 1,000 free. The senior and Venezuelan Olympian set a time in the former, 4:21.16, that is good for an NCAA B cut.

Donald won the 1-meter springboard event against the Volunteers, scoring 349.12 points. He tallied 384.83 in finishing third on 3-meter.

Liendo posted an NCAA B cut time in the 50 free of 19.34 to win the race. The Canadian Olympian swam on the Gators’ winning 400 free relay. He also was on the runner-up 200 medley relay.

Povzner, also from Canada, swept the diving events in a dual meet win over TCU. He scored 427.88 on 1-meter against the Horned Frogs and 436.55 in 3-meter.

McMahon set a pair of pool records as Alabama topped LSU this weekend. The graduate student, who will represent the United States at the FINA World Short-Course Championships next month, went 9:41.86 to win the 1,000 free and 4:46.15 to claim the 500. She also won the 200 butterfly in 1:56.97, a career-best time and the fifth-best in Alabama program history.

Schultz picked up three wins this weekend over dual meets against Duke and North Carolina. The graduate student tallied 344.48 on 1-meter and 353.55 on 3-meter to sweep past Duke. She also topped North Carolina’s divers on 1-meter with a score of 325.58.

Wizard broke a school record in the 200 fly in a meet against Liberty with a time of 1:54.33. That also downed the Arkansas pool record and gave her an NCAA B cut time. The native of England helped her team to a win in the 400 free relay and was the runner-up in the 500 free.
