Florida State Downs Florida Atlantic, Florida International

MIAMI, Florida, October 28. THE Florida State (No. 15) men's and (No. 14) women's swimming and diving teams remained perfect on the season after the women defeated Florida Atlantic 187-112 and Florida International 245-51 and the men beat FAU 206-86. The women upped their recorded to 4-0 on the season while the men improved to 2-0.

"It is a continuation of the good form that we have shown this semester," said head coach Neil Harper. "We needed to race this weekend. It was difficult being on the road having to drive this far down to Miami. It was a good test and for us to compete as well as we did under some adverse conditions. It was a good performance for us. Now we are looking forward to getting back to campus, resting the rest of the weekend and then getting back to hard work and focusing on the Nike Cup at Chapel Hill."

Junior Ian Powell (Guernsey, Channel Islands) led the way for the men's team as he recorded three individual event wins. Powell won the 100 fly (50.51), 200 fly (1:49.71), 200 back and (1:49.11).

"He did well and you can not take that away from him," said Harper. "He swam well in all three of his events."

Sophomore Christie Raleigh (Toms River, N.J.) led the way for the women's team as she recorded two individual event wins. Raleigh won the 200 fly (2:01.63) and 50 free (23.43).

"She step up in the 200 fly and then double backed and won the 50 free," said Harper.

Three Seminoles on the men's squad touched the wall first in two individual events. Junior Billy Jamerson (Savannah, Ga.) finished first in both breaststroke events taking the 100 breast in 57.86 and 200 breast in 2:07.10 while junior Kyle Young (Oviedo, Fla.) recorded wins in the 200 free (1:41.01) and 500 free (4:32.37). Senior Steve Roof (Canton, Ohio) won the 1650 free (15:24.72) and recorded the fastest time in the 400 IM (4:02.27) swimming it in exhibition.

FSU was dominate in the diving events as sophomore Scott Derner (Grapevine, Texas) won the 3M (302.05) and sophomore Dan Frebel (Fort Wayne, Ind.) won the 1M (261.10) for the men while freshman Aleia Monden (Mililani, Hawaii) won the 1M (256.30) and freshman Katie Sirounis (Indian Harbor, Fla.) won the (3M 273.35).

Winning individual events for the men's team were junior Jarryd Botha (Worcester, South Africa) in the 100 back (51.69) and senior Alex Kennon (Winter Haven, Fla.) 46.20.

Winning individual events for the women's squad were senior Lauren Brick (Culpeper, Va.) in the 100 breast (1:02.03), senior Romy Altmann (Cape Town, South Africa) in the 200 back (2:02.38), freshman Kylsie Grimes (Hartland, Wis.) in the 100 free (52.79) and freshman Tiffany Elias (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the 100 fly (56.49).

Both Seminole squads recorded the fastest times in every relay held on the day. The men's team of Powell, Jamerson, Kennon and freshman Corey Swanson (Tampa, Fla.) won the 200 medley in 1:33.15 while the men's team of Botha, Kennon, junior Matt Hammond (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Jimmy Holway (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) recorded the fastest time in the 200 free relay (1:25.89) swimming in an exhibition. The women's team of Raleigh, Brick, junior Lauren Sparg (Durban, South Africa) and freshman Lindsay Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) won the 200 medley in 1:46.36 while the team of Raleigh, Brick, junior Abbie King (Brunswick, Maine) and freshman Leigh Ann King (Baton Rouge, La.) won the 200 free in 1:35.92.
