Florida International Clinches Conference USA Championship

Florida International clinched the 2017 Conference USA Championship with a margin of victory of almost 200 points over second place Rice.

FIU started the night off with a win in the 1650 from Kyna Pereira at 16:27.48. Rice’s Sarah Nowaski finished second at 16:30.66 and Rice’s Hanna Huston was third at 16:35.65.

Rice had a big race of their own in the 200 back with a 1-2 finish from Alicia Caldwell and Jaecey Parham. Caldwell won the race with a 1:57.17 while Parham was second at 1:58.37, just holding off FIU’s Skye Carey at 1:58.46.

FIU got back on track in the 100 free with a win from Letizia Bertelli at 49.15. She won a stacked final ahead of Marshall’s Sirena Rowe (49.53) and FIU’s Naomi Ruele (49.84). This was Bertelli’s second win of the meet.

Rice picked up a big win from Marie-Claire Schillinger in the 200 breast at 2:10.92. Carita Luukkanen of Florida International was second at 2:12.43 and Claudia Kitching of North Texas was third at 2:14.13.

Jenny Deist of Florida International was close to breaking the meet record in the 200 fly but she fell just short of that with a 1:57.30 win. She was just off the 1:56.91 record from 2015 set by Western Kentucky’s Susan Marquess. Kiley Beall of Rice was second (2:00.50) and Kaitlin Benjamin of Rice was third (2:02.06).

Florida International put a stamp on their conference win with a victorious 400 free relay. Jenny Deist (48.97), Marie Lauridsen (49.92), Letizia Bertelli (49.06) and Naomi Ruele (49.20) went 3:17.15 for a commanding win. Marshall (3:21.41) held off a good battle from North Texas (3:21.58) and Rice (3:22.44) to get second.
