Florida Atlantic vs. Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, October 2. THE Florida State women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams started the 2009-2010 season strong against Florida Atlantic University. The women’s team defeated FAU 175-100. The men’s team defeated the Owls 174-101.

The women’s team won 10 out of 15 events, while the men’s team claimed victories in 12 of 15 events. In addition to the teams’ first place finishes, FSU claimed the top three spots in every diving event at today’s meet.

C.J. Hendry, Stephanie Sarandos and Shanda Casella led the way for the women’s side with two victories each. Hendry swept the butterfly events with victories in the 100 fly (56.08) and the 200 fly (2:04.08). Sarandos swept the backstroke events with first place finishes in the 100 back (56.93) and the 200 back (2:02.23). Casella was victorious in the 50 free (23.77) and the 100 free (52.01).

For the men’s side a variety of athletes won events, led by Ian Rowe and Landon Marzullo with two wins each. Rowe took first place in the 1000 free (9:21.30) and the 400 IM (4:01.96). Newcomer Marzullo shined in his first meet as a Seminole with wins in the 1M dive (365.55) and 3M dive (384.60).

One of the highlights of this meet was watching the largest freshman class in Florida State Swimming and Diving history take to the pools. Head Coach Neil Harper was certainly impressed by their performances today.

“We had a lot of people step up and do well. I thought the freshmen kids did well. They’ve been really going hard at practice. They did a really nice job of competing; a couple of them stepped up and won.”

Three freshmen claimed victories in their first collegiate meet. On the women’s side, Kristine Polley claimed a win in the 100 breast (1:06.15). For the men, Mark Weber won the 50 free (21.13) and Danny Nguyen won the 200 fly (1:52.87).

Next up the women’s team takes on Florida International on October 3, at 11:00 a.m. in their annual Paint it Pink meet. The team’s swimmers will don pink swim caps for the meet to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Donations will also be accepted at the gate on Saturday and those fans giving over a $10 donation will receive a t-shirt courtesy of T-Formation. 75% of all donations will go to the Tallahassee Memorial Sharon Ewing Walker Breast Health Center and 25% will be donated to the Kay Yow Foundation.
