Russia’s Andrei Minakov’s 100 SCM butterfly World Junior Record that he broke in December at the Salnikov Cup was officially ratified this week by FINA, according to a social media post from Minakov.

Minakov swam a 50.13 at the Salnikov Cup in December after the World Short Course Championships. Minakov was faster than Norway’s Tomoe Hvas’ time of 50.49 from the World Short Course Champs in Hangzhou.

FINA has not officially updated its world junior records list on their website, but Minakov confirmed the ratification on his personal Instagram account.

Minakov was the Youth Olympic Games gold medalist this summer in the 100 fly when he swam a 51.12. In the “Virtual World Championships,” he would have been fifth in the event behind Piero Codia (50.64)Chad Le Clos (50.65)Caeleb Dressel (50.75) and Joseph Schooling (51.04).

This was Minakov’s first world junior record as he is certainly one of the rising stars in the sport of swimming. In the summer, he trains for Terrapins Swim Club in California. He has yet to indicate if he is going to swim college in the United States.

He talked to Swimming World at the Junior National Championships this summer in California to talk about how he likes training in the United States in the summer versus Russia in the winter.
