FINA Masters World Records Fall at Janet Evans Invitational

IRVINE, California, May 26. WHILE FINA Masters world records were taking a tumble at the Swimming World Cactus Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Masters swimmers were gunning for the record books at the Janet Evans Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

Santa Barbara's Dawn Heckman, 31, posted a time of 4:19.28 in the women's 400 free to claim the FINA Masters world record in the 30-34 division. Frequent Swimming World Masters Swimmer of the Year honoree Hitomi Matsuda previously owned the record with a 4:25.60 from September 2008.

Swimming World columnist Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, 47, put together a strong meet as well. She eclipsed her 45-49 division record in the women's 100 back twice. First, she posted a 1:08.26 in prelims to beat her 1:08.48 from August 2008. She then progressed the record further with a 1:08.11 in finals.

Also in prelims, Pipes-Neilsen posted a 2:26.06 in the women's 200 back. That swim clipped Pipes-Neilsen's standard of 2:26.30 set last year.
