FINA 10K Marathon Swimming, Open Water Grand Prix Events Return This Weekend

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June 25. SOME heavyweights of the international open water scene will be attending the next stages of FINA's two major open water swimming circuits this week-end. On Saturday (June 26, 2010), the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup will be held in Setubal Bay, Portugal, while on Sunday (June 27, 2010), the 36km Capri-Napoli race welcomes competitors for the fifth leg of the Open Water Swimming Grand Prix.

39 men are listed for the 10km Marathon, including reigning World Cup champion Thomas Lurz (GER) and legendary Petar Stoychev (BUL, third in last leg in Argentina). Brazilian star Allan do Carmo, silver medallist of the 2009 World Cup series, will also compete in Setubal (third in first and fifth in second leg of the 2010 circuit).

Among women, medal favourites include Ana Marcela Cunha (BRA, first in Santos and fourth in Viedma), Angela Maurer (GER, first in Viedma) and Karla Sitic (CRO, second in Viedma).

As for the Grand Prix, in the men's field, the powerful Damian Blaum (ARG) will clearly be a threat, having won the silver in last year's Grand Prix.

In the women's competition, Pilar Geijo (ARG) is also a medal favourite as she was the silver medallist of the 2009 edition. She started well the 2010 circuit, finishing first in two races and third once. Other medal hopes include Esther Nunez (ESP, ranked in the top-five in the last four races) and Antonella Bogarin (ARG, second in the first and fourth races).
