The couple has been dating for several years but only went public with the relationship this year. Giunta, 39, is a coach for the Italian national team and the head coach of the International Swimming League’s Aqua Centurions, both of which Pellegrini swims for.

Giunta and Pellegrini began working together in 2014. Pellegrini only spoke publicly about their relationship once the Olympics rolled around this summer in Tokyo.

Pellegrini, 33, is a five-time Olympian and one of Italy’s most illustrious athletes. She won the gold medal in the women’s 200 freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Games after taking silver four years earlier in Athens. She has seven world championships (six long-course) and 14 European championships (seven long-course) in her career. She still holds the women’s 200 free world record (1:52.98 from the 2009 World Championships), one of two remaining female super-suited long-course world records.

Pellegrini has a long and public romantic history in the world of swimming that Vogue Italia once called, “the subject of much useless (and sexist) speculation.”

Pellegrini announced her intention to retire from the sport this year after the ISL season. She’s been elected to the IOC Athletes Commission and is part of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics Board.
