Fast Swims out of Texas Highlight Weekend

BOULDER, Colorado, January 15. WHILE many collegiate swimmers made the trek to Texas for the Austin Grand Prix, others raced in dual meets with their college teams. Here are some highlights from this weekend's competitions.

Several of the nation's top men's teams gathered in Dallas for the two-day SMU Classic. The Michigan men swam away with the title for the fourth consecutive year, beating out strong squads from Southern California, Florida, North Carolina, Purdue and host Southern Methodist.

A handful of swimmers posted quick times at the meet: Michigan's Connor Jaeger (500 free, 4:19.17) and Miguel Ortiz (100 back, 46.73), Florida's Matt Elliott (200 breast, 1:57.79) and Marcin Cieslak (200 fly, 1:43.62), and USC's Alex Lendrum (200 back, 1:43.85) and Vladimir Morozov (100 free, 42.51) each earned wins for their respective teams.

Earlier in the week, Auburn and Texas faced off in Auburn, Alabama, with the Texas men and Auburn women emerging triumphant.

Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace continued her domination of the sprint events, touching first in the 50 (22.41) and 100 (48.44) free events. Vennie Danton was another double winner for the lady Tigers, securing first place finishes in the one-meter (307.05 points) and three-meter (337.73 points) diving events.

Jimmy Feigen (50 free, 19.71; 100 free, 43.65) Eric Friedland (100 breast, 54.80; 200 breast, 2:00.71), Jackson Wilcox (1000 free, 9:01.22; 500 free, 4:26.84) and Neil Caskey (100 fly, 47.75; 200 fly, 1:46.81) led the Longhorn men to victory with two wins apiece.

In other dual meet action, Division III Emory defeated Division II Tampa on Friday night. Paul Weinstein and Jake Stephens each took home a pair of individual wins, with Weinstein's coming in the 500 (4:47.09) and 1000 free (9:57.22) and Stephens' wins coming in the 100 free (48.47) and 200 free (1:46.12).

Sadie Nennig won two events for the Emory women, finishing in times of 59.94 in the 100 back and 2:09.25 in the 200 back.
