Evangelos Makrygiannis Gets USC Started in Win over Utah

Evangelos Makrygiannis swept the backstroke events and helped USC win the medley relay in a 164.5-96.5 handling of Utah Saturday in a Pac-12 meet at Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.

Makrygiannis got the Trojans off and running with a time of 1:26.50 in the medley relay, joining Trent Pellini, Nikola Miljenic and Artem Selin to win by .29 seconds. Makrygiannis went on to win the 100 backstroke in 47.58 and claimed the 200 back in 1:45.55, a decisive win by more than three seconds.

USC took control with a pair of 1-2-3 podium sweeps early in the meet. Pellini led the way in the 100 breast, winning in 52.99 and followed to the wall by teammates Henry Blaul and Miljenic. The Trojans built on that the next event, with Harry Homans winning the 200 butterfly in 1:46.42 ahead of mates Jackson Odgers and Danny Syrkin. USC would also sweep the 200 breast podium with Ben Dillard (1:56.48), Chris O’Grady and Blaul.

Homans added a win in the 200 IM. Daniel Matheson won the 1,000 free and the 500 free. Selin won the 50 and joined Miljenic, Pellini and 200 free champ/100 free runner-up Max Saunders in winning the 400 free relay. USC finishes the dual-meet season with a 5-2 record.

Utah won two events on the day. Santi Contreras won the 100 fly in 48.18, outkicking Miljenic at the wall. Finn O’Haimhirgin bounced back from finishing second in the 50 free to Selin to win the 100 in 44.55.
