European Champion Hubert Kos Set To Make Debut For Arizona State This Weekend

When Arizona State welcomes Stanford and California to the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center this weekend for Pac-12 Conference competition, Hungarian star Hubert Kos will make his debut for the Sun Devils. Stanford and Arizona State will square off in dual-meet action on Friday (2 p.m., MST) while Cal will be in Tempe for a Noon start on Saturday.

Arizona State is currently ranked No. 1 in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America dual-meet rankings, and Kos’ arrival for the spring semester and the upcoming championship season will provide an immediate boost. A Tokyo Olympian, Kos is the reigning European champion in the 200-meter individual medley and gives the Sun Devils firepower in several events.

At the European Championships in August, Kos won the 200 medley in 1:57.72 and was just shy of the podium in the 400 IM, where he finished fourth. Kos clocked 1:57.26 in the 200 IM for sixth at the World Championships, and was 12th in the 400 IM.

In addition to Kos, the Sun Devils will turn to multi-event stars Leon Marchand and Grant House during the weekend meets. On Friday, Stanford is expected to bring Andrei Minakov to the blocks. The redshirt sophomore from Russia is the reigning NCAA champion in the 100-yard butterfly and among the country’s elite performers in the sprint-freestyle events.

On Saturday, defending NCAA team champion Cal will test Arizona State. The Golden Bears feature a roster that includes the likes of sprint star Bjorn Seeliger, multi-event standout Destin Lasco and breaststroker Reece Whitley.
