Euro Long Course Meet: Jonatan Kopelev Posts Swift Sprint Back

LUXEMBOURG, January 29. THE three-day Euro Meet held in long course format in Luxembourg came to an end with another handful of meet records falling by the wayside.

Jonatan Kopelev jumped to second in the early world rankings in the men's 50 back with a meet-record 25.16. That swim clipped Randall Bal's 25.21 set back in 2010, and is second only to Camille Lacourt (25.05) this year. Yakov Toumarkin finished second in 26.13, while Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or took third in 26.41.

Amy Smith lowered the meet record in the women's 100 free with a 54.78 to jump into the top 10 in the world rankings. She broke her preliminary meet mark of 55.13. Caitlin McClatchey earned second in 55.79, while Silke Lippok picked up third in 55.99.

Caitlin McClatchey cleared the meet record in the women's 400 free with a 4:09.77. That time eclipsed the 4:11.36 set by Coralie Balmy last year, and pushed McClatchey into the top 10 in the early rankings. Silke Lippok took second in 4:16.11, while Amalie Emma Thomsen finished third in 4:21.42.

Laura Letrari downed the meet record in the women's 50 back with a 29.06. That effort beat the 29.25 set by Silke Lippok back in 2011. Simona Baumrtova (29.23) and Theodora Drakou (29.28) finished second and third.

Daryna Zevina hit the wall in 2:12.60 to set the meet mark in the women's 200 back. That swim bettered the 2:13.15 set by Annika Lurz back in 2007. Barbora Zavadova (2:13.78) and Simona Baumrtova (2:14.75) rounded out the top three.

Sergiy Frolov topped the men's 400 free in 3:54.94. Christian Scheruebl placed second in 3:54.98, while Ioannis Drymonakos turned in a third-place 3:58.85. Amit Ivry claimed the women's 100 fly title in 1:00.09. Ida Marko-Varga placed second in 1:00.28, while Bethany Carson earned third in 1:00.84.

Alon Mandel captured the men's 100 fly crown in 53.56. Joe Roebuck finished second in 53.66, while Andreas Vazaios picked up third in 53.91. Yakov Toumarkin won the men's 200 back in 2:00.65. Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or (2:01.88) and Jakub Kocar (2:04.53) completed the podium.

Lisa Fissneider clocked a 1:10.87 to take the women's 100 breast title. Aggeliki Eksarchou (1:11.37) and Maria-Georgia Michalaka (1:11.55) took second and third. Igor Borysik won the men's 100 breast in 1:01.99. Laurent Carnol (1:02.17) and Hugues Duboscq (1:02.23) picked up second and third.

Markus Deibler topped the men's 100 free to close out the night with a 50.08. Martin Verner placed second in 50.28, while Jasper Aerents touched third in 50.40. Ian Thorpe tied Raphael Stacchiotti for sixth with matching 50.76s.
