Eric Fehr Named UC Santa Barbara Assistant Swim Coach

SANTA BARBARA, California, July 11. ERIC Fehr, a former assistant swim coach at Wisconsin, has been named the new assistant swim coach with the UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swim teams it was announced today by head coach Gregg Wilson. Fehr replaces Jeremy Kipp who accepted an assistant coaching position at USC.

"I am honored and excited to be joining the UC Santa Barbara program," said Fehr. "This a great program that is devoted to developing outstanding students and athletes. UCSB is exactly the type of school I want to be associated with because of the great academics combined with a great setting."

Fehr has spent the past four years as an assistant swimming coach at Wisconsin primarily working with sprinters and middle distance swimmers while also spearheading recruiting efforts. He also coordinated the Badger dry land and strength conditioning programs in addition to serving as the staff liaison with academic services. This past March, Fehr helped coach the Badger women to a 24th place and the men to a 29th place finish at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships.

"Eric's experience from a top level program will have an immediate impact on our teams," said Wilson. "In addition, he brings an expertise in the recruiting aspect of college coaching that will significantly increase our effectiveness. It's a big win for us to fill this position with a personable and experienced coach who is really passionate about the sport."

Prior to his years at Wisconsin, Fehr was a volunteer assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. during the 1999-2000 season. That season, the Johns Hopkins coaching staff earned NCAA Division III Men's Coach of the Year honors in addition to the UAA Men's Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.

"We have followed Eric since he started at Wisconsin and we know the great results he had there," said Wilson. "Being familiar with him was a great help during our candidate search. With the University of Wisconsin and UCSB being academically similar and knowing the staff he worked with in Madison, Eric has a lot of things in place that will work very well in Santa Barbara."

A 1998 graduate of North Carolina, Fehr was a four-time NCAA All-American with the Tar Heels and an Olympic Trials qualifier. A two-time Academic All-American, Fehr graduated from North Carolina with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Public Policy Analysis.

In addition to his experience in the pool and on the deck as a coach, Fehr also spent two years from 1998-2000 as a financial analyst with Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown and three years (2000-03) as an analyst with Northwest Venture Partners.

Special thanks to UCSB for contributing this report.
