Elka Graham Announces Retirement

SYDNEY, Australia, May 16. ELKA Graham, a two-time Olympian for Australia, has announced her retirement from the sport. Graham’s decision was revealed in an article published by The Australian. Two months ago, Graham failed to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, a scenario that led to her choice to step away.

A 24-year-old, Graham cited a lack of hunger to pursue a berth to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Graham competed at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and raced in the Athens Games in 2004. Graham was ranked as the No. 1 200 freestyler in the world in 2001, but injury kept her out of last summer’s World Championships in Montreal. She never regained her form to qualify for the Commonwealth Games. Graham’s retirement arrives a little more than a week after Giaan Rooney announced she was walking away from the sport.

"I am so happy with what I have achieved in my swimming career and I am ready for the next phase of my life," Graham said in the newspaper article. "Barring Athens, every meet I went to I came home with a medal."
