Long-time Texas men’s swimming and diving head coach Eddie Reese appeared on the Horns 247 Podcast to talk about the NCAA cancellation, how he is staying in touch with his team, and his overall thoughts on this unprecedented time.

Eddie Reese is the head coach of the Texas men who were the top seeded team coming into the NCAA championships this season before the meet was cancelled two weeks before the teams were to converge in Indianapolis. 24 Longhorns qualified for the meet but they were only permitted to take 16 to the championships. No other Division I team in history had qualified that many before.

He talked about what he told his team after the meet were unprecedentedly cancelled when they had a chance to win the meet. Reese has won 14 national titles in his career and has been in the top two at NCAAs on 12 other occasions, but does not like being called the greatest of all-time, because he wants to continuously find ways to get better.

Eddie Reese also talked about his coaching dynamic with Joseph Schooling (9:00) and how he was able to coach him to an Olympic gold medal in 2016 in the 100 butterfly, upsetting the all-time great Michael Phelps in the process. Schooling won Singapore’s first ever gold medal at the Olympic Games in any sport.

Reese discussed his thoughts on how he responds to his swimmers having a poor race (14:00). He doesn’t like it when other coaches lose their minds over poor performances.

“If my swimmers have a bad race, it’s probably my fault. Not theirs,” Eddie Reese said. “I have no right to yell at them or be upset with them.

“You say something simple to pick them up and don’t attack their image, which is already down.”

Reese also talked about how he got involved in coaching while in grad school in New Mexico (23:00).

“I applied for the job and did not get it. And honestly, they were probably right.”
