Eastern Michigan Keeps Lead Heading Into Third Day at MAC Championships
BUFFALO, New York, February 23. THE Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team continued its quest toward another Mid-American Conference title on the second day of competition at the 2007 MAC Championships, here Friday night at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Eagles lead the field with an over total of 657.5 points, ahead of second place Miami (517.5). Dan Wohl won his fourth consecutive MAC title 200-yard IM, and five Eagles placed in the top six in the 50-yard freestyle race.
In the meet opening event, EMU's 200-yard medley relay team of Mark Kurtzer, Chris Meyers, Preston Revere and Derrick Roe took home second place after clocking in at 1:32.24.
Dan Wohl captured another MAC title in the 400-yard IM, setting a MAC, meet and swimming in a NCAA ‘B' cut time by touching the wall in 3:51.47. Don Ellsion (3:57.22) finished second, while Adam Wohl (4:05.09), Dan Kish (4:06.12) and Steven Hill (4:06.19) placed fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.
The Eagles claimed the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly with Revere (49.05) taking home first place honors. He was follwed by Ryan Fulkerson (49.11), Andrezej Olesinski (49.89). Mike Rowland (50.51) finished sixth and Chris Meyers (55.02).
Jason Piercey finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.41. Steven Bowling (1:41.19) and Jeff Montague (1:42.14) finished fourth and fifth, while Roe took ninth (1:41.88).
Meyers finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.87 and A. Wohl took seventh in 58.38.
The 100-yard backstroke event had Kurtzer clockin as the sixth place finisher in 52.02. Fulkerson (52.18), Ethan Crabtree (53.43) and Olesinski (53.46) took 10th, 12th and 13th.
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of D. Wohl, Bowling, Andy Gantzer and Piercey finished first clocking in 6:39.44.
EMU will continue competition at the 2007 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships tomorrow, Feb, 24, at Alumni Arena. The 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, three-meter dive and 400-yard freestyle are the scheduled events for final day with the preliminary round for swimming starting at noon with finals slated for 7 p.m.
