East Carolina Swimming Program Was Suspended in August
The East Carolina swimming and diving team was suspended for a period in August after a possible incident of hazing, but the program has since been reinstated, according to reports from the News and Observer.
According to reports, team members packed themselves into a car and drove very fast in circles before the car was stopped by police. The team was then suspended before ECU and university police separately concluded the incident did not qualify as hazing.
“Those investigations concluded that while a series of activities described as “team building” were determined not to warrant continued suspension of the team, recommendations will be presented to the athletics department for continued support and education of team members,” ECU spokesman Tom McClellan told the N&O.
Universities across the United States have cracked down on hazing in recent years, and ECU’s program is not the first to come under fire for hazing incidents.
According to the N&O, the team is again practicing and preparing for its first meet Oct. 6 against Navy.
