Duke vs. East Carolina

GREENVILLE, North Carolina, January 26. THE Duke swimming and diving teams were in action at East Carolina on Saturday afternoon, as the Blue Devil women defeated ECU, 167-131, and the Duke men dropped a 178-117 decision to the Pirates.

Sophomore Shannon Beall won three events and freshman Ashley Twichell took two individual victories to lead the women's squad in pool events, while sophomore Julie Brummond took first place in both diving events for the second straight meet.

Beall notched first place finishes in the 100 and 200 fly, touching in 56.20 seconds and 2:03.20, respectively, while also taking top honors in the 200 IM race with a time of 2:06.93.

Twichell touched first in the 200 (1:49.81) and 500 free (4:59.86) events and also picked up a second place finish in the 1000 free (10:13.35) on the day, as she combined with sophomore Jackie Fasano for a one-two punch in the 1000 free. Fasano touched in 10:12.64 for the victory.

Freshman Katie Magee was also part of a one-two finish with Twichell, as Magee touched in 5:01.95 to take second place in the 500 free.

Brummond place first on the 1-meter board with a mark of 280.20 before taking the top spot on the 3-meter board with a score of 297.90.

Sophomore Meredith Bannon recorded a win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.66.

To close the meet, the Blue Devil 400 relay foursome of Twichell, Magee, freshman Kirstie Jeffrey and sophomore Shannon Skinner touched in 3:31.67 for first place.

On the men's side, sophomores Andrew Clark and Murillo Adrados and seniors Scott Champagne and Ryan Packer each won events in the pool.

Clark touched in 9:31.29 to earn top honors in the 1000 free and later posted a second place finish in the 500 free (4:43.42).

The 200 backstroke saw the Blue Devils take the top three spots as Adrados finished first in 1:54.39, sophomore Tim McKeever finished second in 1:55.07 and Champagne finished third in 1:55.79. Champagne also picked up a victory on the day, touching first in the 200 IM (1:55.46).

With the win, the Duke women improve to 8-3 on the year, while the men drop to 3-6 with the loss.

The Blue Devils will return to the pool on Feb. 2, as Duke takes on ACC foe Clemson in its last dual meet of the 2008 campaign in Clemson, S.C., at 1 p.m.
