Diversity in Aquatics to Launch HBCU Celebration Meet Dec. 16-17

Diversity in Aquatics will host the inaugural HBCU Celebration Meet on Dec. 16-17 at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

The event is hosted in conjunction with USA Swimming and U.S. Maters Swimming at Morehouse’s Archer Hall Recreation center. It will include a Water Safety Day on Friday, Dec. 16, with in- and out-of-water activities for new and experienced swimmers. Participants can register online for swim classes with local groups and national organizations.

The meet on Saturday will be held from 7-10 a.m. It will celebrate highlights of current and former HBCU swimmers, students and supporters. Information is available through Diversity in Aquatics website.

The HBCU Celebration Meet is in conjunction with the 2022 Cricket Celebration Bowl football game, held at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. That game pits the champions of the MEAC (this year North Carolina Central) and SWAC (Jackson State) in a bowl game.

Until the early 1980s, Historically Black Colleges and Universities sponsored 21 swimming and diving, water polo and rowing programs. That number is down to one – Howard University’s swimming and diving program, with the last two cuts (North Carolina A&T and Florida A&M) cut in 2016. USA Swimming in 2021 began the HBCU Swimming Grant Initiative aimed at supporting swimming at HBCUs. Morehouse’s hosting of this event stems from it receiving one of the five grants in the program’s inaugural year. (The current year’s grant cycle is open and available online.)

Diversity in Aquatics provides educational programming and collaborative relationships in traditionally underrepresented communities to equip historically underrepresented communities and vulnerable populations with the skills needed to be safe and participate in aquatic physical activities and environments.
