An American swimmer winning an individual gold medal at the 1996 Olympics would win $65,000 in prize money. U.S. Swimming awards $50,000 for an Olympic gold medal (money in the relay events are split) and the U.S. Olympic Committee awards $15,000 for an Olympic gold medal. Also, an individual gold medal would garner an additional $1,200 a month for a year, provided that the fastest American in this Olympic event is faster than the 6th place time in the 1996 World Rankings.
