DeVarona Withdraws from USOC Prez Race

COLORADO SPRINGS, July 20. LESS than a week after declaring her candidacy for the presidency of the United States Olypic Committee, Olympic gold medalist Donna de Varona has withdrawn from the race.

Speaking from her home in Connecticut, de Varona told SwimInfo.com that "family and business commitments" precluded her from pursuing the position.

She declined to elaborate.

De Vareona won gold in the 400 IM at Tokyo in 1964, helped found — with tennis player Billie Jean King — the Women's Sports Foundation in 1974 and sserved as a consultant to the U.S. Senate when it passed the Amatuer Sports Act of 1978.

The 55-year-old de Varona is prominent in sports broadcasting and has been a fixture in the industry for more than three decades.
