Derek Maas, Chloe Stepanek Named SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Derek Maas of Alabama and Texas A&M’s Chloe Stepanek were named 2023 SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year on Friday, in conjunction with the conference championship meet.

Maas is a graduate student in Tuscaloosa, having completed his undergraduate degree in biology and pursuing his master’s degree in business administration. The native of Holland, Mich., has maintained a 4.0 grade point average in both course of study. He was twice named to the CSCAA Scholar-American team and the CoSIDA Academic All-American team. He is a three-time member of the Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll.

In the pool, Maas won SEC Championship in the 100 and 200 breaststroke in 2022. He set Alabama records in the 100 breast and 200 individual medley and the SEC Championships record in the 200 breast last season. He finished seventh at NCAAs in the 100 breast last year and fifth in the medley relay. Maas made the A final in all three events in 2020 and finished sixth in the 100 breast in 2021. He was an All-American in both breaststroke events in 2020 as well as both medley relays in 2021 and the two breaststroke events last year.

Stepanek is a junior from Northport, N.Y. She carries a 4.0 GPA as a biomedical sciences major. She is a CSCAA Scholar All-American who has been named to the Athletic Director Honor Roll, the Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll and the First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Stepanek was a second-team All-SEC pick in 2021 and 2022. She holds the school record in the 200 freestyle. She’s a six-time All-American who won a bronze medal in the 200 free at the 2022 SEC Championships. She was second a year earlier at SECs and finished fourth in the 200 free at NCAAs in 2021.
