Denver vs. Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colorado, October 22. UNIVERSITY of Denver juniors Rachel Burns (Tampa, Fla.) and Alex Suppan (Burlington, Vt.) each recorded first-place finishes to help the Pioneers defeat the Colorado State Rams 190-110 this afternoon at the Moby Pool in Fort Collins.

Burns got off to a fast start recording her first top finish in the third event of the day, the 200 Freestyle. Burns edged out teammate freshman Anna Labozan (Superior, Colo.) with a time of 1:53.23 to give the Pioneers a total of 13 points and a first- and second-place finish in the event. Burns' second first-place time came in the 100 Freestyle when she recorded a time of 52.25. Freshman Drew Matthews (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) finished third (52.89) and sophomore Michelle Duraj (Newhall, Calif.) came in fourth (53.48).

Suppan started the day off in the fast lane by swimming the lead leg of the 200 Medley Relay. Teammates Kyrene Clakre (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Bailey Beins (Wichita, Kan.) and Burns combined to finish with a time of 1:46.44 earning nine first-place votes. Burns then followed up her relay performance with a 57.55 first place time in the 100 Backstroke. Suppan closed out her day with the 200 IM, where she swam a time of 2:08.53. Labozan finished a close second with a time of (2:09.68).

Other notable performances came in the 1000 Freestyle where senior Jackie Leung (Gresham, Ore.) turned in a time of 10:33.92 almost six seconds faster than second-place finisher, Jaclyn Best (Boulder, Colo.) who finished the event in 10:39.38. Matthews recorded her first collegiate first-place finish in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 57.92.

On the diving side of things senior Elizabeth Yovich (Parker, Colo.) and freshman Dana Gau (Waukesha, Wis.) competed in their first events of the year. They finished third (251.78) and fifth (217.28), respectively in the 1-M diving. In the 3-M diving Gau finished ahead of Yovich scoring dives totaling 240.83 for a fourth-place finish, Yovich turned in a 232.95 for fifth.

Denver will next compete as a full squad when it travels to UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 28) and Cal Poly (Oct. 29).
