Denver Names New Assistant in Swimming

Denver. July 18 – THE UNIVERSITY of Denver men and women’s swimming and diving program named Mike Laitala, of Richardson, Texas, the new assistant men and women’s swimming and diving coach.

Laitala comes to Denver from the University of North Texas where he was the assistant swim coach for the women’s swimming and diving team for their 2003-04 season. He was also a volunteer assistant coach for the 2003 National Championship runner-up University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team.

“We are delighted to have Mike Laitala join our staff,” Head Swimming and Diving, Jim Henry, said. “He brings a tremendous amount of experience both as a volunteer coach of an NCAA Championship runner-up Texas team in 2003 and as an All-American student-athlete. Mike’s relationship and rapport with his student-athletes are amazing. We are all excited about the new dimension to the Denver program Mike adds.”

An All-American student-athlete and four year letterwinner from 1996-2000 at the University of Texas, Laitala specialized in the breaststroke and individual medley events. He also swam the third leg of Texas’ 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team that placed seventh at the 1999 NCAA Championships. In 2000, Laitala represented Richardson, Texas, at the 2000 Olympic Trials. Laitala received his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 2002.

“I am excited to join such quality coaching staff and athletic department,” Laitala said. “I look forward to working with many talented student-athletes and contributing to the best of my ability at the University of Denver.”
