De Bruijn, Walker Sprint Swift 100 Frees at Austin

By Phillip Whitten

AUSTIN, June 20. IT may be "soft," as Coach Paul Bergen believes, but Aussie Libby Lenton's 53.66 is still the world record.

Coach Bergen had predicted his swimmer, Inge de Bruijn, would regain the world record she held for the 100m freestyle for four years until Lenton broke it at the Australian Olympic Trials in April. But that record-breaking swim will have to wait for another day.

Inky was fast — very fast. She swam 54.43 in prelims today and 54.30 in finals (split 26.07). No doubt she will be even faster in Athens. But Lenton's mark survived the assault from the 30 year-old Flying Dutchwoman.

On the men's side, Neil Walker scored an impresive win in the 100 free, splitting 23.30 on his way to a 49.24-second effort. Longhorn teammates Garrett Weber-Gale was second in a pr 50.02, folowed by Ian Crocker, 50.30, and Nate Dusing 50.41.

In the men's 200 IM, Ryan Lochte overtook 37 year-od Ron Karnaugh with 25 meters to go to win in 2:04.60 to Dr. Ron's 2:05.33.1

Other highlights:

* Men's 1500m free: Ricardo Monasterio's 15:32.92 gave him a 34+ second victory.

* Brendan Hansen took the 200m breast in 2:15.87, two seconds ahead of Christian Schurr.

* A.J. Abercrombie won the 200m fly in 2:00.92.

* Katie Ball had an easy time in taking the women's 1500 in 16:55.55.

* Alexi Spann won the 200 breast by over five seconds in 2:32.67.

* Sara McLarty swept the 200 fly (2:15.81) and 200 IM (2:19.09).
