Davis Wins Gold At 1998 Women’s Winter National Championship

From www.uswp.org – FEDERAL WAY, WA – Davis Open captured the gold medal at the 1998 U.S. Water Polo Women’s Winter National Championship, defeating Cal 6-5 at the King County Aquatic Center.

Goals by Lynn Wittstock and Jaimi Doan in the closing minutes of the contest sealed the victory for the Davis team. Beth Irwin pulled Cal to within one with an outside shot with 27 seconds remaining, but Davis was able to run out the remaining time to preserve the win.

The final day’s action also included Sunset’s 12-4 win over Commerce in the bronze medal match. Huskies claimed fifth place with a 6-4 win over Concord Golden Bear and Marin scored a 12-5 win over Radian in the seventh place match. Ninth through twelveth places were earned by Peninsula United, Nordic, Washington Water Polo and Bainbridge Island.

Alisa von Hartitzsch of Cal was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and Sunset’s Leona Mason earned Most Valuable Goalkeeper honors.
