David Popovici Registers Another Victory At Romanian Champs; Dominates Field In 200 Freestyle

Make it two decisive victories in as many days for David Popovici at the Romanian Short Course Championships. On Friday, the 18-year-old star easily beat the opposition in the 200-meter freestyle, winning the event in 1:43.06. That time was a little less than a second off Popovici’s national record of 1:42.12, set last November at the European Short Course Championships.

The reigning world champion in the event from the summer long-course season, Popovici finished his raced more than three seconds clear of Mihai Gergely, who touched for second place in 1:46.59. For comparison, the best time in the 200 freestyle from the recent World Cup series was 1:40.88 by South African Matthew Sates.

Popovici’s triumph in the 200 freestyle arrived one day after he claimed first place in the 100 freestyle in a national-record time of 46.62. He is still scheduled to contest the 400 freestyle at the Romanian Nationals on the road to next month’s FINA World Short Course Championships in Melbourne. Down Under, a matchup with Australian Kyle Chalmers in the 100 freestyle will be one of the most-anticipated duels of the meet.

With the Romanian Champs serving as a tuneup competition for the World Champs, look for Popovici to put together personal-best performances in Melbourne.
