The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (JCC) in La Jolla announced David Marsh, Technical Director for the Israeli Olympic Swimming Federation, current UCSD head swim coach and head U.S. Olympic Women’s swim coach in Rio, has made the JCC’s world-class aquatic complex as the central training hub and home base for his Team Elite Aquatics program. Previously based out of Charlotte, North Carolina, Team Elite is the premier high-performance swim training group in the United States for prospective Olympians and has trained Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte, Kathleen Baker and Katie Meili. Marsh has coached 49 Olympians from 19 countries and led the U.S. Olympic Women’s Swim Team to the most medal wins in USA Swimming history during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Team Elite currently trains Olympians Baker, Anthony Ervin, Lia Neal, Ryosuke Irie, Meili, Jacob Pebley, and National Team Members Ali DeLoof, Michael Chadwick, Marius Kusch and Kendyl Stewart, all of whom are training for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

“As technical director of the Israeli National Swimming Team, I connected with the Lawrence Family JCC and discovered a shared of vision of creating a West Coast center of athletic excellence for the Israeli National Team,” Marsh said. “My wife and I were excited to move Team Elite to Southern California and hope to have a positive impact on the competitive swimming community in San Diego. Plus, it was the perfect opportunity and location for Team Elite as Tokyo 2020 approaches.”

The JCC is one of only eight facilities in San Diego County with an Olympic-sized pool, sized at 25 meters by 50 meters, which allows for both short and long course training. The average American competition pool is 25 yards long.

The JCC currently owns and operates a recreational swim program, The Barracudas, in its facility for children ages 5 and up. With the guidance of Marsh and his coaches, the JCC will expand its program to offer a progressive group for ages up to 13 with a focus on age-specific techniques including swimming legal strokes, refining starts, turns, and finishes, adding endurance, increasing speed and stamina and enjoying the team environment. Marsh is also offering an official USA Swimming club team with limited enrollment, and members will be selected based on ability following a tryout. Tryouts are now underway for both programs. Additionally, Marsh will host swim academy clinics, stroke technique sessions and skill enhancement programs for all levels throughout the year.

“We believe the JCC’s swim programs are going to see a tremendous boost under David’s guidance and expertise,” said Spencer Lynch, assistant sports, fitness and aquatics director at the JCC. “His presence is an incredible opportunity for the San Diego swimming community. Just imagine the excitement of an 8-year-old when they realize they’re swimming in the same pool next to an Olympian.”

Placement and information sessions for The Barracudas are currently being held by appointment only at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, located at 4126 Executive Drive in La Jolla. All swimmers must be evaluated before joining a program. To schedule an appointment please email Coach Grace, gracet@lfjcc.org or Coach Elijah, elijahg@lfjcc.org. The size of each club is limited, so interested parties are encouraged to reach out immediately.

The JCC also offers swim lessons beginning at preschool age and provides pool time daily for each summer camp. To register for swim lessons, visit www.lfjcc.org or email swimlessons@lfjcc.org. To see which summer camps are available and to sign up, click here.

So this is why North Coast Aquatics got the boot out of that facility after many years serving hundreds of athletes. They got sent packing and are still looking for water for their team members. I am personally very disappointed to see why that happened.

Yes, they did. That was the choice they and their families made to swim in the senior program. Marsh played his part in shattering a program for about 150 age-group swimmers – some outreach swimmers – of an established team so he could selectively admit swimmers with A+ times. What were your words to them? “Boo hoo?” Real class, Carl.

Did anyone expect anything else to happen? First, let’s ride into town, a whoopin and a whompin…everything within an inch of it’s life, then..pull the old number six on ‘em…Now, how to pay the rent….someone’s gonna have to go back and get a $&@tload of dimes…let’s suck off the teet of the locals until that dries up, overpay some people to come in, then systematically fire them as revenues fall so the supreme leader can keep raking it in. Oh wait, I thought we were talking about a team in Charlotte. Learn your history people. It repeats until it is squashed. I thought the ISL was going to solve everything for the pros. Well I guess you still have to break some eggs (eggs in this case=local historically community serving teams and families) to get to that ommlette.

Congrats to Team Elite, JCC Barracudas, their coaches , and the San Diego swim community. It has been a pleasure swimming and sharing the pool with these gracious, respectful, and positive swimmers. Looking forward to seeing the development of positive swim programming for all aged swimmers at a world class level. Also looking forward to supporting team USA, Team Israel, all the olympians, recreational swimmers, and competitive swimmers training and setting an example in our backyard. Stay classy San Diego, and way to up the game!
