Darton, SCAD vs. Emory

ATLANTA, Georgia, January 22. THE Emory University swimming and diving teams returned home in triumphant fashion for the first meet at the Woodruff P.E. Center since November 14th, as the Eagles defeated both Darton College and the Savannah College of Art & Design on Saturday.

The second-ranked Emory men defeated Darton 193-50 and SCAD 151-111, while the Emory women earned a 173-68 win over Darton and a 170-87 win over SCAD. Also, the SCAD men defeated Darton 198-52, while the SCAD women earned a 193-65 win over Darton.

On the men's side for Emory, junior Patrick Augustyn recorded an NCAA Division III ‘B' cut time in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 1:52.96. The Eagles also received a pair of qualifying scores in the one-meter dive, as junior Daniel Kolb finished first with a score of 282.45, while sophomore Kolin Smialek claimed second with a score of 278.85. Kolb also won the three-meter dive with a score of 275.25.

Sophomore Peter O'Brien was the first-place finisher in three events, winning the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. Other first-place finishers for the Emory men included junior Paul Weinstein in the 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman Ross Spock in both the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle, and junior Jared Dubnow in the 200-yard backstroke. The Eagles also received first-place finishes from their men's 400-yard medley relay team of Spock, Peter O'Brien, Augustyn and junior Sean Ransenberg, and their 400-yard freestyle relay team of Spock, Ransenberg, Dubnow and senior Mark Bernstein.

Meanwhile, five Emory women recorded ‘B' cut times in swimming events for Emory, including junior Anne Culpepper in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:36.12), freshman Jennifer Pak in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.68), freshman Sadie Nennig in the 100-yard backstroke (58.12 seconds), senior April Whitley in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.31) and junior Claire Pavlak in the 50-yard freestyle (23.75 seconds). All five recorded first-place finishes in their respective events, while Culpepper added a second top-finish in the 200-yard backstroke, and Pak also claimed first in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Ann Wolber, freshman Suzanne Lemberg, Pak and Pavlak combined to win the 400-yard freestyle relay as well, with a provisional qualifying time of 3:33.25.

Emory freshman diver Sarah Greene notched a qualifying score during the meet, winning the one-meter dive with 256.65 points, while freshman Annabel Enquist won the three-meter dive with a score of 236.25.

Other first-place finishers for the Emory women included senior Liz Horvat in the 200-yard butterfly, senior Amy Minowitz in the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Leslie Hackler in the 100-yard butterfly, and junior Jennifer Aronoff in the 200-yard individual medley. The Eagles also received a first-place effort from their 400-yard medley relay team of Nennig, Aronoff, freshman Kylie McKenzie and Lemberg.

With the pair of victories for each squad, both the top-ranked Emory women and second-ranked Emory men improved to 3-3 on the season in dual meets. Both the Darton men and women dropped to 0-5 on the season with the loss, while the SCAD men's record moved to 9-3 and the women's to 6-7.

Emory will return to the road next weekend, as the Eagles will face Wingate University in a dual-meet matchup on Saturday, January 29th at 2:00 PM.
