Just a few days after announcing the upcoming departure of Nick Juba, the current National Coach for Denmark, the Danish Swimming Union has named his successor to be Martin Truijens.

Truijens will step in as the new head coach at the National Training Centre (NTC) in Copenhagen beginning January 1, 2017.

The position as head coach will be a familiar role for Truijens as he arrives from a similar position at the national training center in Amsterdam where he has been for twelve years. Under his tutelage in Amsterdam he has coached thirteen different swimmers to three separate Olympic Games with his athletes winning more than 60 medals at international competitions.

Swimmers who have trained with Truijens include Sebastiaan VerschurenFemke Heemskerk, and the newly retired Inge Dekker.

Truijens expressed to the Danish Swimming Union that he “look[s] forward to helping to further develop the Danish NTC with swimmers, colleagues, Team enmark and Danish swimming sport in general. There is much new to familiarize themselves with, but I can feel that the time is right for me and for my family. I very much look forward to the new challenges that await, and once we have received address in Denmark, I would be happy to do my part to ensure the continued success of the Danish swimming sport.”

Denmark had its best Olympic showing in 68 years at the 2016 Rio Games with Pernille Blume taking home a gold in the women’s 50-meter freestyle. Blume’s gold medal marks the first swimming gold for the country since 1948.
