Danielle Hill Set For Belgrade As Swim Ireland Announces Squad For European Aquatics Championships
Swim Ireland have confirmed a 20-strong team for the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade as well as the squads for the European Junior Swimming and Open Water Championships in Lithuania and Austria respectively.
Eighteen swimmers and two divers will compete in Belgrade with the pool and diving programmes running in tandem from 17-23 June in the Serbian capital.
Some athletes will utilise the continental meet as preparation for the Olympic Games, whilst for the majority, it will be their summer benchmark international meet and a chance to bring their season to a conclusion.
Danielle Hill will be the sole individual qualifier for Paris 2024 that will compete in Belgrade with Daniel Wiffen, Ellen Walshe and Tom Fannon opting to go to the Sette Colli meet at the Foro Italico, Rome while Mona McSharry will make her own preparations.
Several Olympic prospects who’ll be seeking relay call-ups will also head to Serbia but diver Jake Passmore will bypass the event whilst he waits to hear whether he gets a nod from World Aquatics to compete in Paris.
Shane Ryan, Darragh Greene, Conor Ferguson and Max McCusker will be joined in Belgrade by the next generation of up and coming Swim Ireland stars including Nathan Wiffen, Ellie McCartney and Evan Bailey.
John Shortt and Grace Davison lead a squad of 12 pool swimmers into the European Juniors in Vilnius, Lithuania, which runs from 2-7 July with the European Aquatics Junior Open Water Championships taking place in Vienna, Austria, from 12-14 July.
Andrew Reid, Swim Ireland’s Head of Performance Pathways & Operations will take up the role of Team Leader for both Belgrade and Vilnius.
He said:
“We’ll all get caught up in the Olympic Games soon enough, and rightfully so, but there’s a great deal of Irish excitement to enjoy before that as we venture into other parts of Europe first; there’s 38 athletes named across these four teams – as well as a chance to see Daniel Wiffen, Ellen Walshe and Tom Fannon and others race at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome (21st – 23rd June) in the same week as the Belgrade Championships.
“In the case of the trip to Serbia, when you bring experience and youth together, you get an exciting dynamic within a team and we can all look forward to these flights into Belgrade, Rome, Vienna and Vilnius not just setting us up for now, with Paris ahead, but also for a great future for Irish swimming, as this programme continues to build and grow each and every year.”
