Daniel Dozier Hired as West Virginia Assistant Coach

West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach Vic Riggs announced the addition of Daniel Dozier as an assistant coach on Tuesday.

Dozier arrives to Morgantown after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville. Under Dozier’s guidance, the Bulldogs broke 28 school records and improved nearly 200 points at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championship in that span.

“I’m pleased to welcome Daniel and his fiancé, Sara, to Morgantown and the WVU swimming and diving family,” said Riggs, who will enter his 13th season at the helm in 2019-20. “Throughout the interview process, Daniel and I had several good conversations and his energy, eagerness to be part of our program and desire to be the best coach for our student-athletes was apparent when he came on campus. He comes highly recommended from coaches around the swimming community, and we’re really looking forward to him getting started.”

Dozier, who worked primarily with the sprint and breaststroke groups at UNCA, was honored with the 2019 College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Jean Freeman Scholarship, given annually to six assistant coaches whose exceptional contributions have brought recognition to their college or university, and whose leadership, integrity, honesty, competitive attitude and personal graciousness epitomize those characteristics reflected by Jean Freeman, longtime women’s swimming coach at the University of Minnesota.

“It is an honor to be part of the culture of excellence that Coach Riggs and his staff have built at West Virginia,” Dozier said. “I’d also like to thank (UNC Asheville director of athletics) Janet Cone and coach Elizabeth Lykins for the opportunity to grow at UNC Asheville and learn what it takes to be successful at the Division I level. I can’t wait to join in and watch our student-athletes take the Flying WV to new heights in the pool and the classroom.”

Dozier helped the Bulldogs tally a program-record 820 team points in a sixth-place finish at the 2019 CCSA Championship. The team broke seven school records at the meet, along with two additional freshman records.

Dozier also led UNCA to three dual-meet victories in each of the past three seasons. In the classroom, UNCA has been featured on the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for 14 consecutive semesters.

Prior to his time in Asheville, Dozier was a senior group coach at Waves of Wilmington in 2015-16. He also served as the head coach at Quail Hollow Swim Club in 2013-14.

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Daniel Dozier earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science at UNC Wilmington, while helping the Seahawks to back-to-back CAA Championships. He was named a team co-captain as a senior.
