Dallas Mustangs Win Chesapeake Pro-Am Team Title

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma, December 17. OVER the weekend at the 16th annual Elite Pro-Am meet held by the Chesapeake Swim Club, the Dallas Mustangs surfaced with the overall team title with 724.5 points.

Longhorn Aquatics finished second with 691 points, while the Kansas City Blazers (578), Irvine Novaquatics (509) and Wichita Swim Club (361) rounded out the top five.

Individually, the meet record took some major hits as record-breaking performances cleared the double-digit mark.

Kirsty Coventry, representing Longhorn, had one of the best all-around meets of anyone at the Pro-Am as she claimed four titled – all with meet-record times. Coventry walked away with titles in the 100 (52.29) and 200 (1:52.88) backstrokes, as well as the 200 (1:57.19) and 400 (4:06.18) IMs.

Rachel Komisarz of Lakeside picked up four wins of her own. She grabbed the 50 free with a time of 21.99 in the shoot-out, the 100 free with a meet record 48.31, the 100 fly with a meet record 50.88 and the 200 fly with a 1:56.57.

One other person snared four titles as Robert Margalis of Athens Bulldog accomplished the feat. His distance prowess gave him wins in the 500 (4:18.00), 1000 (9:07.80) and 1650 (15:15.68) freestyles as well as a meet record in the 400 IM (3:43.14).

The women had a pair of swimmers win three titles each. Shannon Vreeland, 16, of the Kansas City Blazers owned the distance freestyle events with wins in the 500 (4:54.34), 1000 (10:03.18) and 1650 (16:58.01), while Megan Jendrick of KING swept the breaststroke events with meet records in the 50 (27.11), 100 (58.80) and 200 (2:07.38).

Meanwhile, Ian Crocker of Longhorn earned three titles as well. He posted a meet record in the 100 fly (45.60) and took home the 50 free (19.47) and tied with teammate Garrett Weber Gale for the 100 free (42.80).

Mark Gangloff of Mecklenburg and Eric Shanteau of Longhorn doubled up during the meet. Gangloff touched first in the 50 and 100 breast with a meet-record time of 24.31 in the shorter distance and a winning time of 52.70 in the longer.

Shanteau, meanwhile, posted a meet record in the 200 IM (1:43.91) and won the 200 breast (1:55.25).

Longhorns Aaron Peirsol and David Cromwell each also clocked meet records as Peirsol won the 200 back (1:38.79) and Cromwell did the same in the 200 free (1:33.61).

Tanica Jamison of Longhorn (200 free – 1:45.78), Doug Van Wie of Mecklenburg (100 back – 46.14) and Patrick Cary (200 fly – 1:45.21) each also won titles.

In other action, Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, 45, a contributor to Swimming World Magazine clocked eight United States Masters 45-49 records during the meet.

She twice set the 200 IM record with a time of 2:09.81 in prelims and a 2:07.26 in finals. She also cleared records in the 50 free (24.35), 100 free (52.23), 200 free (1:53.28 – split from the 1000), 50 fly (26.60 – split from 100 fly), 100 fly (57.42) and 100 back (58.77).
