CWPA Releases Week 4 Men’s Water Polo Polls

BRIDGEPORT, Pennsylvania, October 2. The top teams in the three weekly polls remain unchanged as the University of California-Los AngelesWhittier College and Princeton University top the 2014 Men’s Varsity Week 4/October 1 National Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Polls.

In the National Top 20 rankings, the Bruins of UCLA remain the unanimous top choice in this week’s balloting with 100 points.  Stanford University (95 points), the University of California (90 points), the University of Southern California(85 points) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (80 points) follow as the Top Nine positions in the rankings remain unchanged from the September 24 voting.

Whittier join the Bruins as a unanimous No. 1 selection as the Poets picked up 100 points to outdistance Johns Hopkins University (90 points) by 10 points for the No. 1 position among small college institutions in the Division III Top 10.

Similar to the Division III Top 10 poll, the CWPA Top 10 experiences a widening of the gap between No. 1 and 2 as the Tigers of Princeton (100 points) become the unanimous No. 1 pick and hold a five point lead over Northern Division frontrunner Brown University (95 points) for top billing in the league.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2014 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 4)

The University of California-Los Angeles (100 points) remains the unanimous No. 1 selection in the Week 4/October 1 National Top 20 Poll.

UCLA, which moved up to No. 1 last week in the wake of downing former No. 1-ranked Stanford University by a 9-7 final score, leads a Top 20 in which 11 of the 20 teams, including the first nine spots, retain their rankings from seven days ago.

Stanford (95 points), the University of California (90 points), the University of Southern California (90 points), the University of California-Santa Barbara (80 points), Long Beach State University (75 points),University of the Pacific (71 points), the University of California-San Diego (65 points) and the University of California-Irvine (57 points) hold firm at No. 2-to-9, while Princeton University (54 points) edges out the University of California-Davis (51 points) to acquire the No. 10 spot.

UC-Davis slips back to No. 11, while Pepperdine University (45 points) joins the Aggies in inching back one spot to No. 12.

Brown University (38 points) and Santa Clara University (29 points) exchange the No. 13 and 14 berths in front of No. 15 the United States Air Force Academy (24 points).

The biggest mover of the week is Whittier College (21 points) as the Poets jump from No. 19-to-No. 16.

Loyola Marymount University (20 points), Harvard University (16 points), the United States Naval Academy (14 points) and St. Francis College Brooklyn (10 points) complete the Top 20.

California Baptist University (6 points), Bucknell University (3 points), Concordia University (3 points), Johns Hopkins University (2 points), George Washington University (2 points) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (1 point) also received votes.

2014 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 4)

The Poets of Whittier College (100 points), which are now ranked at No. 16 in the National Top 20 Poll, remain at No. 1 in the Week 4/October 1 National Division III Top 10 Poll.

Whittier, which returns to be a unanimous top pick, expands its lead for the top spot to 10 points over its closest rival as the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University (90 points) remain at No. 2.  The lead is double the distance between the Poets and Blue Jays from last week as Whittier held a mere five-point margin against Johns Hopkins in the September 24 balloting.

Similar to the National Top 20, changes at the top of the rankings are few and far between as the University of La Verne (84 points), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (82 points) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (76 points) cling to the No. 3-to-5 positions, respectivley, for another week.

However, Pomona-Pitzer has company at the No. 5 spot as Chapman University (76 points) inches into a tie for the position.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (75 points), California Lutheran University (65 points), the University of Redlands (57 points) and Connecticut College (34 points) round out the Top 10.

Washington & Jefferson College (22 points) also received votes.

2014 Men’s Varsity CWPA Top 10 (Week 4)

The Tigers of Princeton University continue as the top rated team in the league as the squad picked up 100 points to become a unanimous top selection in the Week 4/October 1 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Poll.

Princeton, which finished second to St. Francis College Brooklyn last season in the CWPA Championship title game and was ranked No. 1 in the wake of the Preseason, Week 1, Week 2 and Week 3 ballots, is the only team in the Top 10 to retain is position from the September 24 voting.

Northern Division frontrunner Brown University (95 points) and the United States Naval Academy (88 points) both move up one spot to take over at No. 2 and 3, respectively, while defending league champion St. Francis (82 points) returns to the championship picture scene by climbing four slots this week to take over at No. 4.

Harvard University (80 points) slips to No. 5, while Bucknell University (73 points), George Washington University (72 points) and Johns Hopkins (69 points) rate at No. 6-to-8.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (59 points) and previously unranked Iona College (33 points) complete the Top 10 with Fordham University (24 points) also receiving votes.
