Correction: Phelps Never Planned to Swim at Charlotte

PHOENIX, June 11. ON June 9, swiminfo ran a story by reporter Bill Bell on the Charlotte UltraSwim meet, featuring the men's 200 meter butterfly. The story seemed to imply that world record-holder Michael Phelps, of North Baltimore, was ducking a head-to-head confrontation with Olympic champion and former WR-holder Tom Malchow, of Club Wolverine.

In fact, Phelps never planned to swim in Charlotte and never entered the meet. This fact was confirmed by his coach, Bob Bowman. As soon as we learned of this fact, swiminfo deleted the original story
and ran another story that did not mention Phelps.

Nonetheless, swiminfo apologizes for implying that Phelps might have been ducking a head-to-head match with Malchow.
