Commonwealth Games: Sam Williamson’s Golden Comeback In Glasgow Is One For The Ages
Aussie breaststroker Sam Williamson’s Glasgow gold medal triumph to overcome adversity is a story for the ages and one that has captured the imagination of sports fans worldwide.
The battle that left Williamson struggling both physically and mentality after suffering a ruptured patellar tendon 14 months ago in an agonising training accident. (The patellar tendon connects the knee bone to the shinbone tibia).
It is one of swimming’s great comeback stories and certain to be one of the stories of these 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Twelve months ago, Williamson couldn’t walk. The 2022 Games silver and bronze medalist over 50 and 100m breaststroke and the 50m world champion in 2024 was reduced to crutches and watching the Singapore World Championships from his couch.
But with belief and some rigorous rehab, and Sam Williamson is today a Commonwealth Games champion, one who had to swim past and hold off England’s breaststroking GOAT, Adam Ramsay-Peaty, to get to the top of the podium.
Williamson powered home over the final stages of the race to clock 59.17 and although he was long on the wall, it was still the Midas touch to out-stretch rising star from the English Channel island of Jersey Filip Nowacki (59.34) and Ramsay-Peaty (59.65) – Nowacki winning Jersey’s first Games medal in the pool.
It is a story Swimming World has covered in the countdown to the Games, as Williamson staged his remarkable return to the pool under coach Craig Jackson at the Melbourne Sports And Aquatic Centre – and with unwavering support from the Victorian Institute of Sport and Swimming Victoria.
First of all his return to racing in January at the Victorian Championships.
And then his brave fight to make the Dolphins team at the Australian Trials in June.
To today’s remarkable victory in Glasgow, a story that has captured the imagination of Australian sports fans and certainly around the Commonwealth. Televised live in Australia, the race and reaction are being replayed and replayed on every network around the country and in Sam’s words, “It just goes to prove if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything…..”
Moments after his win, Williamson was poolside with Australian Olympic gold medalist Giaan Rooney for an emotional moment on the Channel 7 Games broadcast. He was asked what it meant to come back.

“After everything that’s happened, all the ups and downs and believe me there’s been a lot of downs over the last 12 months, so just getting up on the blocks tonight is something I’m going to be immensely proud of,” said Williamson, who only made his senior debut four years ago in Birmingham, at the Commonwealth Games.
“But to come away with a gold medal like that against a world champion, an Olympic champion, and a world record holder is something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.

“The thing I’m most proud of is just getting up on the blocks tonight was something I was always going to be so proud of, but now to come away with a medal is incredible, to come away with a gold medal is just a dream come true….and it just goes to prove if you put your mind to it..you can accomplish anything…..”
And on his girlfriend Linnea Lindberg, an accredited photographer on pool deck in Glasgow, he said: “I reckon she may have more tears in her eyes than I do at the moment but if we get one good photo tonight it’s going to be all worth it….
“Having Linnea on pool deck and my Mum and Dad and my sister watching in the stands and everyone back home watching ..this is for all of us….I love you all.”
But there may well be a lot more proud moments to come with his favourite event, the 50m breaststroke, the 4x100m medley relay and maybe the 4x100m Mixed Relay left to swim. And time for Linnea to refocus!
