Commonwealth Games, Day Four Para Events: Beau Matthews Blasts to Title in 100 Breaststroke (SB9)
For several years, Beau Matthews has been viewed as a future star for Australia in Para swimming. on Monday night, the upstart confirmed his promise by capturing Commonwealth Games gold in the SB9 final of the 100-meter breaststroke at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre. Matthews delivered a performance of 1:09.41, which handed him a decisive victory and an appearance on the top step of the podium.
Matthews has enjoyed a superb 2026 campaign, winning a variety of medals between the World Para Series and competitions in Australia and New Zealand. But the opportunity that presented itself in Glasgow offered his biggest challenge to date, and Matthews answered the call. Leaving no doubt, the Aussie went out in 31.60 and came home in 37.81 to defeat New Zealand’s Joshua Willmer, who touched the wall in 1:11.44.
Matthews was joined on the podium by his countryman, Timothy Hodge, who picked up the bronze medal with a time of 1:12.74. That mark was .05 ahead of Canada’s Jack Gill.
Women’s 100 Breaststroke (SB8)
England’s Brock Whiston was dominant en route to the gold medal in the SB8 classification of the 100 breaststroke, as she roared to a time of 1:22.05, good for a four-second victory. Whiston was a half-second ahead of silver medalist Husnah Kukundakwe (Uganda) at the turn, but the English star pulled away over the last lap. Kukundakwe touched in 1:26.20 for second, with the bronze medal going to England’s Iona Winnifrith (1:26.31).
