Columbia Sweeps Dartmouth

HANOVER, New Hampshire, November 4. COLUMBIA tracked down a pair of wins against Dartmouth on Saturday. The men beat Dartmouth, 205-87, while the women finished in the win column, 167-130.

For the men, freshman Nick Barron won both butterfly events and anchored the Lions' victorious 200 free relay, comprised of fellow first-years Jordan Kobb, Chris O'Conner and Phillipe Putzeys. In all, the Columbia class of 2010 accounted for first-place finishes in seven individual events. The newcomers also led the 200 medley relay, which launched the meet with a 1-2-3 finish for the Lions. The winning team was first-years Gabe Schubiner, Kobb and O'Conner, plus senior Michael Nelson.

Seniors Jake Abbott (1:44.03 in the 200 free), Tobin White (9:45.59 in the 1000 free) and Luke Fitzpatrick (52.86 in the 100 back) led the upperclass group.

In the diving, junior Justin Reardon won the three-meter board with a score of 291.83. Reardon was second in the 1m.

In all, Columbia finished first and second in nine events, and swept the top three spot in six.

"It was a solid day all around," noted head swim coach Jim Bolster. "We had a good team effort."

In the women's meet, Hannah Galey won multiple individual races and competed on the Lions' first-place 200 medley relay to lead the team. Galey, a sophomore, anchored the 200 medley relay which swam 1:48.27 to set a pool record. Senior co-captain Mary McCue opened with the backstroke leg, junior Amy Karakuer followed with the breaststroke, and first-year Allison Hobbs swam the butterfly.

Galey went on to win the 200 free in 1:54.24 and 100 free in 52.74.

Krakauer was first in the 100 breast in 1:06.61; McCue won the 50 free in 24.73; Hobbs was fastest in the 100 fly in 59.10; Lisa Rohrs was victorious in the 200 fly in 2:10.19; Lauren Fraley touched first in the 100 back in 1:00.61 to lead a 1-2-3 Lion sweep of the event. Columbia also earned a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 back; sophomore Bridgette McCabe won in a lifetime-best time of 2:06.49. In the diving events, Shannon Hosey scored 256.19 on the one-meter board to win the event, followed by fellow sophomore Joanna Corby.

Columbia took first and second in five different events and placed first in a total of 10.
