Collegiate Water Polo Association Week 10 Men’s Coaches Polls Now Released

BRIDGEPORT – The University of California-Los Angeles, Whittier College and Princeton University remain on top of the 2014 Men’s Varsity Week 10/November 12 National Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Polls.

UCLA retains the No. 1 position in the National Top 20 Poll as the Bruins picked up 99 points, falling one point shy of maintaining its prior position as a unanimous top selection. Overall, the Top Seven positions in the poll remain unchanged as Stanford University, the University of Southern CaliforniaLong Beach State University, the University of California, the University of California-San Diego and the University of the Pacific hang onto their rankings for another week.

Whittier remains the top pick in the Division III ranks as the Poets garnered 100 points to become the unanimous top pick in a Division III Top 10 Poll which underwent major changes for the fourth week in a row.

In the wake of the league’s Northern and Southern Division Championships, the CWPA Top 10 also experiences minor changes as the Tigers of Princeton continue to top the rankings as the unanimous choice of the pollsters. Brown University and Bucknell University stay at No. 2 and 3, respectively, but a Third Place finish by Harvard University at the Northern Division Championship causes a shockwave shift in the remainder of the Top 10.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2014 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 10)

The University of California-Los Angeles remains the No. 1 team in the country as the Bruins pick up 99 points to lose its position as a unanimous top pick in the Week 10/November 12 National Top 20 Poll.

UCLA, which returned to the No. 1 spot two weeks ago, is followed by Stanford University (95 points), the University of Southern California (91 points), Long Beach State University (84 points), the University of California (81 points), the University of California-San Diego (75 points) and the the University of the Pacific (70 points) as the first seven positions in the poll remain unchanged from the Week 9/November 5 voting.

The Top 10 does experience a minor change in the final three positions as Princeton University (62 points) and Pepperdine University (60 points) both bump up one position to take over at No. 8 and 9, respectively, to drop the University of California-Santa Barbara (53 points) down to No. 10.

Brown University (51 points) inches closer to a Top 10 rating as the Bears hold on at No. 11 for another week.  The University of California-Irvine (50 points) breaks out of a tie with Bucknell University (42 points) at No. 12 as the Anteaters claim sole possession of the spot and the Bison slip back to No. 13.

The University of California-Davis (35 points), the United States Air Force Academy (28 points) and Loyola Marymount University (22 points) stay at No. 14-to-16, with Santa Clara University (17 points) inching up to take over at No. 17.

Harvard University (16 points), St. Francis College Brooklyn (13 points) and Whittier College (6 points) complete the Top 20, with the United States Naval Academy (4 points) and California Baptist University (2 points) also receiving votes.

2014 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 10)

The Poets of Whittier College (100 points), which are ranked at No. 20 in the National Top 20 Poll, remain at No. 1 in the Week 10/November 12 National Division III Top 10 Poll.

Unlike the National Top 20 Poll which experienced minor changes, the Division III rankings are scrambled this week with only four of the teams retaining their ranking from a week ago.

Behind the Poets, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (90 points) rises one position to take over at No. 2.  Johns Hopkins University (83 points) joins CMS in moving up as the Blue Jays flutter two spots to No. 3 after rating at No. 5 in the November 5 poll.

Chapman University (80 points), which ranked at No. 2 last week, moves into a tie with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (80 points) at No. 4, while the University of Redlands (77 points) ascends to No. 6 after claiming the No. 8 spot last week.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (75 points), California Lutheran University (65 points), the University of La Verne (60 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (38 points) complete the Top 10, with Connecticut College (27 points) also receiving votes.

2014 Men’s Varsity CWPA Top 10 (Week 10)

The Tigers of Princeton University continue as the top rated team in the league as the squad picked up 100 points in the Week 10/November 12 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Poll.

Princeton, which finished claimed the league’s Southern Division Championship over the weekend and has been ranked at No. 1 since the Preseason balloting, tops a league poll which experienced some minor changes this week in the wake of the Northern and Southern Division tournaments.

Northern Division champion Brown University (95 points) stays in striking distance of the Tigers as the Bears continue at No. 2 for the fourth consecutive week.

Southern Division runner-up Bucknell University (89 points) hangs on at No. 3, while Harvard University (84 points) moves up to No. 4 thanks to a runner-up finish at the Northern Division Championship. St. Francis College Brooklyn (78 points), the league’s 2012 and 2013 champion, slips to No. 5 after finishing Third at the Northern Division Championship.

The United States Naval Academy (77 points) and Johns Hopkins University (70 points) stay at No. 6 and 7, respectively, as the pair placed Third and Fourth at the Southern Division Championship.  The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (58 points), which placed Fifth at the Northern Division Championship, moves up to No. 8, with George Washington University(52 points) and Fordham University (39 points) completing the Top 10 after registering Fifth and Fourth place marks at the Southern and Northern Division Championships. 

Iona College (11 points), Connecticut College (11 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (11 points) also received votes this week.
