College Swimmers Lead Night One of the 2017 Speedo Sectionals Minneapolis

Night one of the 2017 Speedo Sectionals Minneapolis kicked off with a number of fast swims, led by college athletes from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Among the notable swims was a tie in the women’s 200 breaststroke between Vanessa Herrman and Hannah Hunt, as well as a new meet record by Conner McHugh in the men’s 200 breaststroke.

In women’s 100 freestyle, 15 year old Grace Cooper of Delta Aquatics led a trio of U.S. Open qualifiers. Cooper touched first in 56.38. She was followed by two Wisconsin teammates, Jessica Unicomb and Madison Tew who finished in 56.64 and 57.04 for second and third, respectively.

Minnesota’s Bowen Becker had a commanding win in the men’s 100 freestyle, finishing in 50.66, a half second ahead of the next closest finisher. Joseph Myhre, representing the Hawkeye Swim Club, came in second in 51.13, just ahead of Wisconsin’s Anthony Lyons, who was third in 51.20.

The women’s 200 breaststroke was one of the more exciting races of the night, with AquaStorm’s Vanessa Herrman and Fox Valley’s Hannah Hunt tying for first place. Their time of 2:35.97 was under the U.S. Open qualifying standard. Minnesota’s Kaela Marcus was third in 2:36.78, also under the Open cut.

Minnesota’s Conner McHugh dominated the men’s 200 breaststroke, not only winning by over three seconds, but also by setting a new meet record. His time of 2:12.89 shattered the previous mark of 2:13.89. McHugh was followed by Missouri State’s Phillip Willett, who touched in 2:16.02 for second. Brenner Hohenstein, also from Minnesota, was third in 2:17.52.

The women’s 200 butterfly was led by Kelsey Drake of the Hawkeye Swim Club. Drake touched first in 2:15.89. Green Bay’s Emma Lasecki placed second in 2:17.26, while Missouri State’s Emma Wall finished third in 2:17.94.

Wyoming’s Jack Herron had a commanding win in the men’s 200 butterfly, placing first in 2:01.49. Second place finisher Joseph Milinovich of Wisconsin touched in 2:03.18. Milinovich’s teammate Michael Sullivan was third in 2:04.98.

In the women’s 800 freestyle, Wisconsin’s Grace Tierney was the lone swimmer to dip under the nine minute mark, touching first in 8:56.81. She was followed by her teammate Madison Tew, who was second in 9:01.05. Barrington Swim Club’s Magdalena Emary finished just behind in third in 9:01.74.

Minnesota’s Nicholas Plachinski led the men’s 800 freestyle by nearly four seconds, finishing in 8:22.81. He was followed by Bennett McDade of Badger Aquatics in 8:26.44 for second. Edina Swim Club’s Matthew Hedman was third in 8:30.31.
