Coaching Great Jacco Verhaeren Discusses Career and Approach on Inside With Brett Hawke Podcast

When the name Jacco Verhaeren is spoken, high-level success on the international stage comes to mind. Verhaeren is one of the elite coaches and administrators in the world, with his latest role serving as the High Performance Director for France on the road to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. If Verhaeren follows his career arc, the French should put together a strong showing at their home Games.

The former coach to Olympic champions Pieter van den Hoogenband, Inge de Bruijn and Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Verhaeren has produced repeated excellence in the sport. He recently sat down for a 90-minute interview with the Inside with Brett Hawke Podcast, where he discussed his career, memorable moments and what is necessary to keep raising the bar.

Before taking his role with France, Verhaeren provided guidance for Germany. During the previous eight years, Verhaeren was the head coach for Swimming Australia, and was charged with returning the Dolphins to prominence after the Aussie National Team slipped in the years before his arrival. Although he left Australia prior to the Olympic Games last summer in Tokyo, Verhaeren’s influence was evident in the excellence produced by Australia.

In the interview with Hawke, the two-time Australian Olympian, Verhaeren noted that he and van den Hoogenband grew together in the sport, with the Dutchman starting to work with his star pupil, then a 15-year-old, at the age of 23. Verhaeren also talks about building a team and the importance of growth as a coach.

Here is the complete interview between Hawke and Verhaeren.
